Chicago, Half 2 | Sketch Away: Travels with my sketchbook

Extra from Chicago: I’ve drawn the Bean too many instances, (it was the situation for a workshop I taught years in the past) however I had one other go this time round.

Close to the Bean is Lurie Backyard, a 2.5 acre native plant backyard. It’s like a little bit of the prairies set in opposition to skyscrapers and a quiet place to get away from the crowds. Plus, I like these coneflowers!

What’s with Chicago and naming issues after meals? Cloud Gate is The Bean and Marina Towers are the Corn Cob Towers. I’ve to confess, the title fits them, and now that I do know it, I draw them extra corn cob-like too.

So I spent my final half hour earlier than heading to the airport with Michael (11 years outdated, from Peru, been in america for 3 years), drawing on the road nook. We don’t converse a typical language, however drawing collectively was nonetheless pretty.

Within the half hour that I used to be there, a really stoned, very candy man stopped by, assuming I used to be Michael’s mother, and informed me a few refugee program that might assist us, then provided Michael the contents of his backpack. Minutes later, a really indignant girl got here by and kicked all of Michael’s sweet into the road.

The child barely reacted. Passersby helped acquire the sweet again and Michael’s mother got here and gathered up stuff and took Michael again along with her. Life for this child and his household appears unimaginably laborious. In the midst of all of it, he sat down and drew.
