One other go to to Cockatoo Island (and beginning to use a brand new device!)

Final week I had one other go to to Cockatoo Island with a sketcher from California.

This time, I used to be with Laurie Wigham, who sorted me so properly throughout my visits to San Francisco in 2017 and 2018 (together with a really particular sketching journey in a Frank Lloyd Wright constructing).

We had a wonderful day of sketching and had every kind of fascinating artwork conversations.

And I began utilizing a brand new artwork provide (one which has been on my listing to begin utilizing for quite a lot of years!)

The primary sketch on the island was one of many massive cranes.

Then, whereas Laurie did a second model of the crane, I began sketching the view in the wrong way. We had been having a terrific dialog about instructing and making an attempt new issues, so I wasn’t concentrating an excessive amount of on what I used to be doing.

At lunch, we sketched the view from the cafe. These are the identical blue sheds that I did final time (see right here) from a unique angle.

I had SO a lot enjoyable layering color on this!

We then went to the highest of the island and hung out on the identical shady spot the place I sat  the week earlier than. And I sketched the identical sandstone constructing – however this time with totally different colors.

We obtained speaking about drawing with thick posca pens and the work of James Hobbs (I’ve been a fan of his work for years!).

Laurie was drawing with a gray Posca, after which I made a decision I’d strive it, too. It was actually unusual to attract with a thick bullet-tip pen after I’m used to the expressive marks of a fude nib.

I initially discovered it arduous to manage the angle and work out the right way to make good strains, however then I actually loved the problem. Drawing with a thick line was tremendous enjoyable! You must be extra strategic about what strains you draw, and I discovered myself experimenting with the best way I made my marks so I may create some variation in line.

As soon as we obtained to Round Quay, I took Laurie to Parker’s Artwork and purchased a couple of Poscas. So keep tuned for some experiments with them within the coming weeks.

Thanks Laurie for a very inspirational day!
