Piñatas

I’ve at all times cherished grids, and this week I explored them in two methods, whereas utilizing up pulp from the Papermaking Grasp Class final week. On the left is a watermark that includes a Japanese sample referred to as shippo – seven treasures – referring to the seven treasures of Buddhism (gold, silver, lapis lazuli, crystal, agate, purple pearl, and carnelian). These treasures signify the seven powers of religion, perseverance, sense of disgrace, avoidance of wrongdoing, mindfulness, focus, and knowledge. The shippo design, with its everlasting chain of interconnected circles, is a sample of excellent omens, full of needs for happiness, concord, and karma. This watermark is impressed by my upcoming journey to Japan.

The piece on the fitting continues to be moist within the photograph – I embedded hemp string grid in between sheets of excessive shrinkage, translucent abaca. It’s going to shrink because it dries, and I’m curious to see what occurs.

I had the pleasure of interviewing Roberto Benavidez on Episode #125 of Paper Discuss. Benavidez is a sculptor specializing in impeccably crafted piñata kinds that play with the underlying themes of race and sin which might be innate within the piñata.
