A number of weeks in the past, my accomplice and I walked the Mākara Walkway Loop Monitor. Mākara is a rural space between Wellington Metropolis and the Tasman Sea. The 7km loop monitor begins at Mākara Seaside and runs south alongside the ruggard coast line, under steep cliffs in locations, to Opau Bay the place it heads up a steep valley by way of farmland to the ridge. A big wind farm runs alongside the ridge, 62 generators in complete. The monitor passes very near one of many large generators. It’s unbelievable how massive they’re up shut. On the highest level the monitor passes a number of concrete gun emplacements constructed throughout World Battle II (the weapons are lengthy gone).
That is the view from Opau Bay. We stopped right here for a relaxation and sufficient time for me to do that fast sketch. It was a sizzling summers day and there’s no shade, so we didn’t cease for lengthy. The South Island was clearly seen. It is just about 25km away.
Right here is one other view I sketched on the walkway in 2015. This time in winter. It was chilly and blowing a gale, however nonetheless stunning.
